Metaballs are a little special in blender in that they belong to "families".
So if these share the same object name prefix they are treated "as one"

Please refer to the manual https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/modeling/metas/editing.html#object-families.

Not sure what you mean this was working "a long time ago"? [Afaict, it has always been like this?]

Dont see a bug here, closing (but feel free to comment again if issues persist...)

I'm sorry, you're right, the behaviour is indeed exactly the same as in blender 2.79.

Few months ago, I was trying something with metaball in 2.8 and I wasn't able to select metaballs in 3d viewport. I thought it was a small bug but it was to early in my opinion to report it. I did my stuff using outliner to select metaballs. I didn't used metaballs a lot with 2.5 (in fact, nothing useful, I just played with it) but I can't remember I noticed that problem when I did. So, today, I reopened my work with latest blender, and I noticed the same problem, that why I reported it. But in fact, you can select individual metaball by clicking on the circle surrounding them.

Sorry again, I should have test 2.79 before submitting.

Thanks for your great job :)
