Hi! Could you explain how this compares to the existing osm importer? https://developer.blender.org/diffusion/BAC/browse/master/io_scene_open_street_map.py Havent tested it yet, but from quick glance the existing importer has more features [more map features supported, UTM, ...]?

The existing addon doesn’t generate volumetric geometry and doesn’t support large maps.
All supported types of existing add-on objects are supported in the new one (latest actual version on github).

Do you have a post about this in the forums? It would be good to get some feedback from users. Have you contacted the author of the built in osm?
Given that the current osm importer has been removed from release due to inactivity and no update, this could be a valid replacement.
Are you looking at maintaining this long term?
do you have any test files we could use?

I don't have post in the forum and not contacted to author (and my code not based on his module).
I will maintaining this long term anyway.
Test files post soon on my github with new version of script.

We could look at replacing the script in contrib if you like. If we get good feedback we may look at adding to release around 2.81
