Short description of error
In the VSE Preview - Text "X & Y" alignments are not working correctly

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Opened blender's Video Editing Workspace
  2. I added a text layer in the timeline > the text is placing by default in the bottom the VSE Preview monitor
  3. In the "effects strip" panel, I changed the alignment of X & Y. But, it doesn't work properly.

(e.g. when I selected "Top" from the align Y dropdown - The text is aligned to "bottom". the same issue in the align X)

I think the Location X & Y will place your text in a position of the preview area and the Align X&Y only aligns the text at that position like in a text editor:

The Align X&Y are not presets for the Location X&Y values. The reason the text to move up when selecting bottom is because it is aligning the bottom of the text to the location position. And Top makes align the text top to the location position.

This behaviour is not very clear from the labels or the tooltips.

To avoid users thinking that Align settings are presets, maybe the Location X&Y widgets should be above the Align X&Y, so they will be in the order that first is the X&Y position entered and then followed by the less important align text at that position. Or even better, the alignment positions could be icon buttons:

That said, I think the functions are working as intended, but IMO the current infos on the functions are confusing.

I'll leave a SS here of the functions:

We should probably just copy what we did for text objects here.

That would make it so much more clear. If Location would have it's own sub panel too, users wouldn't think, the alignments are presets for the Location values.

We should probably just copy what we did for text objects here.

Agree, but text outside of preview with default position is bug though

To me the issue is simply that the default is bad. We should probably default to the text being placed in the center, like this:
