System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.15063 64 Bits
Graphics card: Quadro M2000/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 385.41

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.80 (sub 74), branch: master, commit date: 2019-07-11 13:50, hash: 06312c6d2d
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Strange pink light in lookdev mode

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

Getting a strange pink or white light in the view port while in lookdev mode. Seems to be random and is fixed by quitting and re-starting. Only started seeing this today after downloading Blender 2.8 RC.

Just tried same file in 2.80.74 which I've been using since 28/6/19 and there is no issue.

Can't send .blend file as it's massive.

Don't want to complain as Blender 2.8 is awesome - keep up the fantastic work{F7602966}

We really need a minimal blend file that allows us to reproduce this issue.

Blend file attached. Afraid it's 180mb.enclosure_for_photos 004.blend

I think it’s a graphics card issue. I have another machine which I use for rendering. It has an RTX2080ti and am not having the issue on that machine.

Just got the same issue on the rendering machine with the RTX card so it's not card specific. The light is blue this time. It appeared while I was enabling and disabling collections in the viewport.

When I zoom out it appears as a flat cube of light that completely blocks the view when I zoom in. Strange. Been using Blender for 3 years and never seen this before.

Is that really the smallest you can make the file? The smaller/simpler you can make it (while still showing the problem of course), the less time developers have to spend digging through unknown stuff in order to figure out what's going on. Please spend some time making the smallest file possible -- you know the file, so you'll be able to do that much faster than us.

The problem is that I don't know what's causing the issue. I can't find a way to replicate the problem reliably. This means I have no idea what to remove to make the file smaller but still cause the problem.

It seems to happen when I've been using the file for a while (not when I first open it) then when I enable/disable collections in the viewport.

I'll play with different factors and see if I can reliable replicate the issue in a smaller scene.

I've deleted quite a bit of the geometry and it's still happening. Seems less frequent with less geometry in the scene. Screen shot of issue attached.

I've managed to replicate the issue on 2 machines. Both running Release Candidate on Win 10-64bit. One with a Quadro M2000 and one with an RTX2080ti.

To replicate the issue all I do is open the attached file. Make sure I'm in Look Dev mode then toggle Disable in Viewports on Collection 1 off and on until the light appears. It was happening every few times, now I have to disable/enable 10 times or so for the light to appear. Hope this helps.

I could actually reproduce this, one time. When I first opened the file and enabled all the collections, the viewport turned entirely white. When I zoomed in a bit it got fixed, when I zoomed out it was all white again. Then I started disabling the collections again and the color changed from white to pink and possibly other colors. After disabling all collections it was fixed, and re-enabling the collections again would not produce the issues again. I was doing this quickly since I was excited that I could reproduce it. But alas, any further toggling of the collections, even after restarting blender, could not produce the issue again and everything looked fine.

Probably a minor bug, since it's hard to reproduce and seems to fix itself eventually... But odd. In any case, no longer needs information from user. (Although I'm sure when a dev sees this they'll have requests for further information.)

Just one final thing to add. I think it's a combination of factors causing this.

  1. I have objects in the scene where the shader has emission plugged into both surface and volume on material output
  2. There are hundreds of these in the scene
  3. Many of the objects are set to switch on and off randomly on the timeline. I do this using noise.random() on an input value then turn it into a 0 or 1 controlling the fac on a mix shader

I think it's this combination of these 3 factors that causes the issue. You'll find the weird light sometimes appear if you drag the timeline.

Not a major issue just thought you should know. If I can find a way of replicating it every time I'll let you know.

Thanks for looking and please keep up your awesome work on Blender.

@Kagey can you make a short screen recording that shows the issue and how to trigger it, please?

I upgraded to 2.80.75 (Full release) as soon as it was released and I can't replicate the problem. I've been trying for 10 minutes and it hasn't happened.

If I can get it to happen again, I'll send screen video.
