System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.17134 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 391.25

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.80 (sub 74), branch: master, commit date: 2019-07-18 14:52, hash: 38d4483c6a
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
[Blender will not recognize the video hardware in the preferences or provide the option of the cycles render engine in the render context tab in the properties window after rendering a video edit. It has done this both with a new file created for video editing only, or a general file to which a video editing tab is added after the file is created.]

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Create a new file for video editing. Add a video to the video sequence editor. Choose an output directory. Set the output setting to the ffmpeg video format. Choose the h.26 in MP4 encoder settings. Then render the animation. Cancel the rendering process and then check the preferences window to verify that the video hardware is recognized by the program. On my machine, the hardware has no longer been recognized and the cycles option in the Render Tab in the properties box is no longer available after the process described above.]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

  • Which Cycles option specifically is no longer available. Is the CPU / GPU Compute setting grayed out? What about the Cycles device settings under Preferences > System?
  • Do you have any add-ons enabled, and does disabling them avoid the issue?
  • Are any error shown in the console? Under Window > Toggle System Console.

Sorry for not responding sooner. I have disabled all the addons and the behavior is the same, and no I do not see any errors in the Console. The drop down to select Cycles as the render engine is what is no longer available. When I reported this a couple of days ago, the option to use Cycles as the render engine was initially available upon starting the program (Blender 2.8). Then later after running the render of the video, (which I canceled because it was taking too long) the option to select Cycles as the render engine was not available, and the video hardware was not being detected in preferences window. Today, though, neither the option to select Cycles as the render engine nor the hardware is being detected even upon the initial startup of the program (Blender 2.8). I'll attach a few screen captures to illustrate. The last screen capture is that of Blender 2.79 successfully detecting the hardware on this same machine.Capture05.PNG

I have to apologize, but I now realize that in my haste to check your suggestions last night, I turned off all of the addons, which includes the Cycles addon. So while the screen captures I provided from last night show that the addon has been turned off, they also illustrate the behavior I encountered when I originally made the report. So I am thinking that if anything funny went on when I originally made the report, it would be that the cycles addon got turned off automatically. However, last night I downloaded the latest build an played around with it a little bit and I could not reproduce the behavior. I don't think that I could have inadvertently turned off the Cycles addon when I originally made the report, however, since I cannot reproduce it, perhaps it is not worth spending a lot of time on this one. If it were to happen to me again I will look into it more to see if that is the case before reporting it again. Thank you for your time.
