Blender crashes - tile size #68866

Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.17134 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1060/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 431.60

Short description of error
tile size of 1080x1080 causes Blender to crash with error: Launch failed in cuCtxSynchronize(), line 1800

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
this is not first time, so basically when I want to render anything while using tile size of 1080x1080... it does it also with 512x512 or bigger... if I get small enough everything works... rendering with CPU works. Never had this problem on 2.79.

Not sure what is causing this exactly, but I'd guess it is some memory issue (it works fine for me).
Maybe we should use an upper limit for the tile size. As I understand it, making it very large only increases render time.

TLDR: rendering with bigger tile size /in my case optimal seems 2048x2048 decreases render time...

what do you suggest?

your link is 2 year old and is related to Cycles to Rhino, Cycles had have a lot of improvement untill today, best tile size for Cycles in Blender depend on many parameter, for my porpuse best render tile size is 64 and my Workstation never had crash related to this render tile size

IMO internal GPU problem as memory or maybe too data to elaborate or so, however this is not a forum or chat, this is a Bug Tracker.

Bigger tile sizes use more memory, especially when using denoising and render passes. If it runs out of memory because of that, it's not considered a bug.

Note that for bug reports we require a simple as possible example .blend file to reproduce the problem.
