Short description of error
.ply exporter exports incorrect number of vertices. The original .blend file has 7573 verts, but Blender 2.79 exported .ply file has 9249 vertices, Blender 2.8 exported .ply file has 9277 vertices.

Indeed, seems to generate quiet a few doubles (after re-importing the .ply in Blender, merge->by distance removes those and we go back to original amount of vertices).
Changed status from 'Open' to: 'Archived'
PLY needs extra vertices for UV's and colors, this is whats happening in this case.
