Blender stuck when opening large files #70931

Operating system: Windows 10 (i7 5820k, 128 gb ram)
Graphics card: nvidia gtx 980

Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.80, edbf15d3c0, master, 2018-11-28, as found on the splash screen)
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Blender jams/get stuck after opening large files.

from the debug output you can see 2 warnings referring to the dropbox lib of the original creator of the files. Could this be the reason for blender to get stuck?

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

  1. Open blender (normal or factory startup)
  2. open file - in this case: "idEA-HHO.blend"

Had a look, well, I can see

Warning: Cannot find lib '\..\..\Users\XXXXXXX\Dropbox\IDEA public\20150919 1315 Concepts_iDEA.blend'

in the debug output, but that should leave you with broken links and would not cause blender to freeze/crash or anything like that.

What do you exactly mean by:

Blender jams/get stuck after opening large files

  • does blender freeze?
  • does blender crash?

We need a bit more information to progress with this report.

thank you for examining this issue.

What I mean is that blender freezes, while loading the file. The ‘open file’ menu is still visible, but changes into ‘not responding’ after a while (screenshot).

Hi Philipp,

the file you're referring to is located in a company dropbox folder that i do not have access to.

Do you recon that this might be the cause for Blender, to jump in some sort of infinite loop?

note: you should be still be able to append everything that is accessible from that file as a workaround.

That being said, I still think we should not freeze in that case, could you share the file you are trying to open, so we can reproduce?

Regarding the file upload - the file is 285mb & it involves something we made/are making for a customer, where sensitive data is the case. I don’t mind getting the file to you for a test, but an upload in this open forum is not an option. I suggest that you could PM me your e-mail, so I can wetransfer it?

Please try

  • Disable dropbox/network-access and load the files you have locally.
  • Load the files on a different computer, to check for the same behavior.

If this works, suggest to close this report since we don't control 3rd party remote file access.
