Frequent crashes especially when rendering #71044

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce RTX 2080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 436.48

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.80 (sub 75), branch: master, commit date: 2019-07-29 14:47, hash: f6cb5f5449
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
I'm experiencing frequent crashes, I'm pretty new to Blender but I've done some modelling in the past and wanted to give it another go, and I really don't feel like I'm populating the scene with too much verts/data. I'm trying to follow tutorials, some basic and some a bit more involved with animation nodes but it's extremely frustrating when I'm doing exactly what they're doing, they're not crashing and I consistently am. The main problem is rendering anything, even just single images. Pretty much anytime I render an image, not even trying to render animations, just a single image will immediately crash and close the program. What I really don't understand is that I can get it to render occasionally, while changing nothing in the scene, or the model, or anything. It's like it fails every other time, sometimes everytime, bu tat least every other time. Then I'll load it up again, and it will render ok, and the next render will crash to desktop.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Again, it's random, sometimes it crashes just moving things around but that's infrequent, the real problem is rendering. I've tried Cycles, Eevee, Cycles with and without Cuda, Eevee with and without cuda, both with cpu or Gpu compute. My pc is fairly high end, not like ultimate pro animator build but I've got 32 gb of ram, I9 9900k, a 2080TI. As an artist who isn't the most skilled technically with pc this is pushing the limits of my patience, I can't get to what I'm good at. I understand that it could very easily be some setting or something that I'm not seeing or aware of and I'm also aware this is freeware but I've already spent a lot of money trying to get a solid pc rig, this is pushing the limits of my patience, I would very greatly appreciate any help with this.

Have you tried the 2.81 or 2.82 beta? There were some fixes related with rendering and generated mesh.

Haven't yet, just very wary of daily builds, especially when it says on the build page The following builds have the latest features and cool bug fixes.(Great!) They can be unstable and mess up your files.(Um....) Use at your own risk.(OK, I guess?)

Is either one more stable than the other in your opinion?

Tried your file on 2.82 with render preview (Optrix), playing the animation, changing parameters and dragging around the timeline for 10m and no crashes.

System specs: i7 7820X, 64Gb RAM, GTX 2080 Super, Windows 10 Pro (1909)

I have been building master daily for our production work at my company. Right now 2.81/2.82 are the same, there aren't any new commit just for 2.82, so just choose one ;). And just for the record, the work we do can go from simple modelling to doing simulations and animation, I'm an ex-3dsmax TA user.

Ok, I'll try it out. This is going to sound very stupid, but the daily build isn't a new install? I don't see an install file in the zip, so I just extract the folder to Blender Foundation folder?

There are never stupid questions. And yes you are correct, there isn't any installer, just unzip to any folder (I keep a folder with various blender versions, each one in its folder of course).
It will ask you when opening if you want to import the 2.80 settings into 2.82. I normally start by not importing and rebuild my settings, just in case something broke along the way.

Very cool Daniel, and thank you for your time, effort and very, very quick responses. I'm sure you can imagine how frustrating it is when it feels like you're stumbling over pebbles and everyone else seems to be bounding over boulders.

No problem, hope it solves your problem.

I really hate to keep asking questions, I'm sure you have plenty of your own things to work on but I'm having different issues now. It seems to be rendering much more consistently in 2.81, I abandoned volume fog cube, that just wasn't looking good and seemed to be contributing to the crash on my end for whatever reason, so It's rendering better, still crashed a few times but not as often, especially after deleting the volume cube, which I probably wasn't implementing the right way. The problem I'm seeing now is some kind of weird animation stacking, sometimes, for no discernible reason, the particles are stacking after a loop, so when I'm at frame 1 the emitter is where it should be but the particles from the end of the animation, that shouldn't be alive yet, are persistently frozen there throughout the animation. I don't know if that makes sense. I attached a screen shot if that helps explain it. This happens on my end in both Cuda and Optix. tracerscreenshot.jpg

I don't know if there is some method of clearing/refreshing the viewport to get rid of that without having to quit and reopen the file?

None that I know, but that is weird. Couldn't it be a problem on animation nodes?

I have no doubt it could be, I've read in a few places that AN isn't playing nice with 2.8 but at least as far as I can tell I followed the tutorial precisely and it wasn't doing that in 2.80, only started doing that after trying 2.82 Anyway, I think I'm going to move on to a different tutorial. Thanks again for the help Daniel I really appreciate it.

I can't reproduce the problem. And animation nodes is not officially supported yet.
Try to describe steps to reproduce the problem without using custom builds or unofficial addons.
