Short description of error
When adding a text strip in the video sequence editor and try to change the alignment, it seems to do the opposite of what you want to.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open Blender with Video Editing workspace.
  • Add a text strip
  • Change the alignment in horizontal and/or vertical direction in the strip settings.

Have a nice day :)

I agree it need some love, but this part seems to be ok.
In the image below the text alignment is really on the left, no?

Thanks for your replays! :)
So, if I understand that correct, the »Alignment« is not really an »Alignment«, but rather something like »setting the origin of the text block«?
Because an alignment would mean, that if I set the X Alignment to "Right", every line of text block starts on the right side, like the Icon tells (see blue arrow in the screenshot).

. But every line always starts on the left side of that text block. People, who are reading from right to the left can't use that.
All that Icons are telling a complete different behavior of this functionality.

Germano Cavalcante (mano-wii) lowered the priority of this task from 90 to 50.

I just tested the left, in fact the alignment is not as indicated by the icon.
@Richard Antalik (ISS), could you take a look at this one?

[...] it needs some better tooltips, and if possible some better UI solution or icons? Or someone to rewrite the OP to align within an area instead.

Ja! The current tooltip is also incorrect and more confusing, as helpful. Maybe a blinking text marker would help to indicate, where the "origin" of that text block is?

Thank you! :)

I just made set of icons, that would be descriptive enough for this function. Text Block Anchors:

And why not change the actual alignment of the text? Being able to make centered or right-aligned titles in the VSE would be nice, right?

This is working as intended, removed the icons since they were misleading rBaff6446e064f: UI: remove text alignment icons for sequencer text

... okay, wow... that is the love the VSE has needed xD

Discussing potential UI improvements isn't the purpose of the bug tracker.

https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Reference/Not_a_bug

Appreciate we have around 1000 open reports at the moment, if we accept suggested improvements, this can increase considerably without actually helping much if we don't have anyone to implement them.

If someone from the UI team likes to pick this up as a design task, that's fine.
However I suspect users really want text alignment to work as it does in a word processor instead of these basic placement options - tweaking the icons doesn't do much to address that.

I'm sorry for requesting a feature here. Please don't give up Peter. I've added a proposal for this on RightClickSelect
