System Information
Operating system: Darwin-18.5.0-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M OpenGL Engine NVIDIA Corporation 4.1 NVIDIA-12.0.23 355.11.10.50.10.103

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.82 (sub 2), branch: master, commit date: 2019-11-28 22:02, hash: 77c7440540
Worked: (optional)

the "extrude" value under "geometry" for curves does not respect scale.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

add two curve circles.
scale one of them by 5 and apply its scale. The scale shown in the object properties does show the change from scale 5 to scale 1.
set 'extrude' value to 1 meter on both of them.

the first curve will be 2 meters tall, the second will be 10 meters tall. just like its scale had not been applied. I would expect both to be 2 meter.

If you change the height of the second one from 5 meters to 2 meter (scale z 0.2) and apply the scale it will jump back to 8.5 meters tall.. which I don't get at all..

In your case, use the Scale Reset from the built-in Curve Tools addon.

Thank you.
I take it that if there is an addon fix for this it is a known issue?

Thank you. I take it that if there is an addon fix for this it is a known issue?

It's not a problem. These are the two ways that deserve to be. Sometimes you need the first (built-in). At times the second.

Also, this problem can be solved without resorting to the addon:

  1. You can also scale in edit mode.
  2. Or scale the curve, apply scaling, switch to edit mode, select all points and set the Mean Radius = 1 and Mean Tilt = 0.

Such questions often arise.
The behavior of Blender with Apply Scale for a curve is not obvious to people coming from CAD programs.
Therefore, in Blender I would add function for the curves (one button): "Apply Scale and Mean Radius".

I've never used cad, I've been using blender for years and it still confused me.
I can see that if you where using a bevel profile you might want it to keep its proportions after you apply the scale. I was only thinking of my use case..
I knew scaling in edit mode would solve the issue.
I guess one thing the threw me was that this is inconsistent with meshes. When using the skin modifier for example, applying the scale does cause a change in the radius. As does the size in the wire frame modifier unless using "relative thickness". Same goes for bevel widths when using the bevel modifier.

A nice solution might be a pop up asks to "Keep Mean radius" or "Apply Mean Radius" when you try to apply scale on a curve.
That way you do not need another button in the interface and the user is made aware that they might need to consider the Mean Radius.

Thank you again for your answer. Always good to learn something new in blender.

Yes, this has come up before, see #71691 (Wrong Deformation when using Curve Modifier) for example.

Agree this could be improved upon, but in the end it is working as intended atm. and not considered a bug.

For more information on why this isn't considered a bug, visit: https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Reference/Not_a_bug
