Display Workbench Textures On Curve Objects #73246

System Information
Operating system: Darwin-17.7.0-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD - FirePro D500 OpenGL Engine ATI Technologies Inc. 4.1 ATI-1.68.24

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.82 (sub 6), branch: master, commit date: 2020-01-18 18:58, hash: 3e11c4e63b
Same on Windows version with same hash as well as in older versions of the 2.8x series.

Worked: (optional)
Worked in 2.7x Blender viewport ('Texture' mode)

Short description of error
Textures don't display on curve extrusions in 'Solid' viewport shading mode even when UVs are assigned and 'Texture' is chosen as the object color. Instead, Curve extrusions simply stay gray.
These same textures show up fine on regular mesh objects in the same viewport. Also the curves display as intended in Material Preview and Rendered modes.

[Please fill out a short description of the error here]

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Ideally open attached blend file to see the issue right away.

Alternatively :

  1. Create a curve object and give it depth and UVs and apply a material
  2. Import a bitmap texture, attach to the curve's material and select it
  3. Switch to Solid shading mode and activate Texture as object color
  4. Compare look in Solid and Material Preview
  5. Repeat the above steps for a mesh object with UVs

[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

The workbench engine only support UV Maps and only displays the active UV Map. Curves don't have UV Maps so it isn't displayed. We could add support for this and isn't that much of work so will assign to me.

Jeroen, that sounds great and yes it would be very much appreciated!

But just to clarify - if the curves don't have UV coordinates - why do they display fine in Material Preview (or export out of Blender as UV-mapped geometry)? At which point do the UV coordinates get added?

Workbench only supports UV Maps by design. EEVEE/Cycles have more mapping options (for example project world position as uv coordinate) and therefore can render it.

Any chance we could see this feature being (re-)added in 2.90? It would be really helpful for curve modelling in order to get better viewport performance with texture preview (by making it possible to perform these tasks in workbench and not eevee).

Right now if you do anything with textured curve profiles, you have to run in material preview mode to have an idea about what's going on.
