System Information
Operating system: Windows-8.1-6.3.9600-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce 840M/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.4.0
Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.82 (sub 6), branch: master, commit date: 2019-12-18 22:47, hash:
da6929488a
Worked: (optional) 2.80a
Short description of error
Since 2.81 Cycles rendering in Viewport and F12 Render is broken. Viewport crashes, Rendering uses CPU noneless GPU is choosen.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Any scene crashes using Cycles Viewport render.
I guess it is because of the higher OpenGL Expetations from 2.81 up on. 2.80 worked just fine all day long.
However I know Bugs are closed fast these days, I still report, I don't see why a software update would render my laptop to "old gear" when it should be ok as OpenGL is concerned.

Please update your graphics driver to the most recent version from the Nvidia website and check if that resolves the issue.
Not that easy for laptops. :(
@CarstenWartmann What particular issue are you facing?
I fear that the standard Laptop Drivers will not work well on my laptop, and the vendor (acer) has no newer drivers :( Maybe I am brave do some system backup and try...
Hmmm.... Or a live linux?!
These are the official drivers provided by Nvidia, the vendor of your GPU, so this should work properly.

Seems to work now! Have not rebooted (I am baffled that a driver install on win does not need a reboot?!) so far but looks good.
And Cycles is rendering on GPU!
Thanks Robert!
