Short description of error
Polygon selection with multiple objects in edit mode can't be assigned to material slot.
All objects have gotten same material via material linking (CTRL + L -> Materials)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open attached file.
  2. Mark all cubes and enter edit mode.
  3. Select on each cube one red face and assign it to green or blue.
  4. You'll see that only one cube will get the color. The cube which has active selection.

Not really a bug, bug could be a nice improvement, see [D6869: Fix #73871: improve assignement of material to selection in multi object editmode](https://archive.blender.org/developer/D6869)

That's great.
It's sometimes hard to know, if something don't has the functionality yet or is a bug. :)
As a creator I just expect in some cases an behavior that is consistent.

Great job! Thank you.
