System Information
Operating system: Darwin-19.2.0-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
Memory: 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
processor: 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
Graphics card: AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB OpenGL Engine ATI Technologies Inc. 4.1 ATI-3.4.19

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.82 (sub 7), branch: master, commit date: 2020-02-12 16:20, hash: 77d23b0bd7
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Viewport in Material Preview mode is laggy (Simple scene with 5 objects).
Also the MacBook gets hot.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open the .blend file and set the Viewport to Material Preview mode.
  • Try to move the view position, zoom in - out, it should lag (it lags to me).

It lags more if add more materials to objects (video).

I read some posts saying that MacBooks are not good for Blender but I also read some posts suggesting to use MacBooks for Blender so it is not clear to me if my MacBook is the problem or my blender configurations (I have the default settings).

I recently bought the MacBook and I am really disappointed that it lags. Does anyone have the same issue and if there is a known fix?

Also I am considering to return my MacBook Pro If I can't fix the lagging issue soon, can any Blender pro suggest me a good laptop for Blender?

Looks like something is with transmission and AMD graphics cards (see video attached). Tested also on OSX with Intel GPU, works fine.

I can actually replicate this behaviour.

2019 Pro, i9, 16GB, 560X 4GB - Mojave 10.14.6 - 2.83 Nightly

For a good Blender laptop you will have to switch to linux/windows. Almost any laptop with a decent nvidia RTX, the razer ones eg will never be as fancy as a macbook but they will outperform them by far. This i9 is almost always throttled and graphics performance is ...mediocre. if you are not bound to only having a laptop id recommend getting a mid range laptop and then render and simlulate on a desktop as i do (nvidia graphics and ryzen).

This is possibly due to the metallic materials (see #66231), but I don't have a Mac to confirm.

Can anyone confirm if it is the same problem as #66231?

Yes it is the same issue. Here is the Instruments trace of the lights.blend file while orbiting the viewport in EEVEE. Lots of SCCompileShader calls.
