Short description of error
In the viewport, you can't see wireframe (vertex, selected components) through a semi-transparent object

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error


1 - Create 2 objects one behind the other
2 - Make front object semi-transparent (via Object properties > Viewport Display > Color > Alpha
3 - Select the second object in Edit mode

Using git bisect I narrowed down the problem commit to hash c476c36e400883d929a7149def8dcb6ad6157a86 which unfortunately is quite large.

I thought the issue would lie in overlay_edit_mesh.c however this file was not changed in the commit.

Unfortunately this is a side effect of the refactor which streamlined a few things. But this meant having transparent object being opaque to overlays in solid mode.
This was a design decision.

Note that this refactor brought other improvement like the possibility of having thansparent objects using in-front property.
