System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: dual Radeon VII

Blender Version
Broken: (All Blender Versions)
Short description of error
When i want to render big szenes with complex volumetrics (Smoke simulations) the render is freezing (the usage goes to 0% and it stops rendering but dont close blender)
it is the same issue with a fresh reinstall of windows or an other mainboard / CPU / Radeon VII(i testet 3) / RAM (i used a 9900K, z390designare, 64gb 3200 ram, 7920X, 64gb 3000 ram, ASUS Tuff x299 mark 2)
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
download the following project files (rar) as example https://www.patreon.com/posts/36626880 its free
open the Flat Large Scale 1
bake the simulation
bake the noise at 3
render frame 65
wait

Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

Flat Large Scale - 01.blend

Here's the .blend file for people who don't want to go to the Patreon link.

Also, @GregorBoxer by "Broken: All versions of Blender", what do you mean? Specifically what versions of Blender have you tried.

Can you render with less samples & less resolution divisions ?

Can you render with less samples & less resolution divisions ?

I tried blender 2.80 2.81 2.82 2.83 2.79b and the blender 2.83.9 vdm branch and blender 2.90
(For the blender versions i dont know the specific one because i deltet them and mainly use the vdm version but the issue is on all blender versions on the top)

I've tried playing around with this scene a few times on my computer and I haven't been able to get to a point where I can reproduce the error. This is due to a few reasons:

  1. I don't have a AMD GPU. So I'm just running my GTX 1050ti in Blender with the OpenCL testing mode.
  2. The simulation takes up lots of RAM and I'm generally having a hard time getting it to work due to this.

I believe the issue is possibly caused by the scene exceeding the VRAM of the Radeon VII, but that card does have a lot of VRAM (16GB) so I'm not 100% sure.

Hopefully someone else can help you with sorting this issue.

Yeah with less samples it is rendering correctly
And less light bounces

@GregorBoxer then I don't know what's causing the issue, I will leave the handling of this report and the fixing of the issue to the Blender developers.
I wish you luck in getting this sorted.

Thanks @Alaska

I could render on the cpu but it would take hours

Lowerd the samples and lightbounces and then it runs (but thats not what i want) so the render takes under 3min and with my cpu an hour and 12min

With recent build I got crash when I tried to bake noise.

This file is very complex however. @GregorBoxer is it possible to reduce file complexity(or time it takes to test bug like baking only 1 frame)?

@GregorBoxer I am looking at older reports, is this still an issue? Or have anything changed?
