System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 64 bit ver 1909 build 18363.778
Graphics card: Rx5700
Driver Version: 19.50.29.27-200421a-354308E-RadeonSoftwareAdrenalin2020 (20.4.2)
Blender Version
Broken: 2.82a
Short description of error
When rendering with a material with a transmission of 1 and volumetric absorption turned on in GPU Render (Open Cl) the shadow for said object/material does not render. Shadow renders fine with CPU render on, or volume absorption off / removed.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open blender and set render to open cl / GPU compute
Volumetrics absorption on+ transmission to 1 on your material
Settings of Volumetric absorption do not matter just that it is present / turned on
Render object with material

Done with open cl with 5700 on fresh windows install
same as above but with CPU render instead of GPU / openCl render
GPU/ OpenCl render with no volumetric absorption

Doesn't happen on
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: Radeon RX550/550 Series ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.13586 Core Profile Context 19.12.2 26.20.15002.61
There are quite ugly glitches though.
Worst case was below. but usually there are only lines through image and noise
Ok after doing some more investigating I think it's only an issue with the 5700 series cards. I popped in my old r9 380x into my machine and with the same drivers rendered this.
This was done on the same machine, on the same fresh install with the same drivers.

#69916 seems very similar to this issue, but in 2.9.0.2 a, I still was not able to render a shadow.
@jvb50m I am looking at older reports, is this still an issue? Or have anything changed?
Hey Richard, as of right now I'm unable to render with my GPU in blender, it just crashes whenever I try to use the GPU in cycles.
However last time I checked I fixed this by rolling back to a much older driver and I was able to get renders, but I was not able to get a shadow with volumetrics turned on, (this was one of the 2.90 versions.) However, I'm not able to check if the specific issue persists at the moment as that older driver now causes other issues with my computer so I'm unable to use it. But if i had to guess it is still an issue.
Sorry that I couldn't be more help, but blender seems to just not work on the RX5700 gpu

There are quite a lot of people that report issues with the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (see #75319). This appears to be an issue with the AMD driver.

OpenCL rendering support was removed in Blender 3.0.
The combination of the limited Cycles kernel implementation, driver bugs, and stalled OpenCL standard
has made maintenance too difficult. Thanks for your report, but it's unlikely that there will be further fixes for OpenCL in 2.93 LTS.
For AMD GPUs, there is a new backend based on the HIP platform.
In Blender 3.0, this is supported on Windows with RDNA and RDNA2 generation discrete graphics cards.
It includes Radeon RX 5000 and RX 6000 series GPUs. Driver version Radeon Pro 21.Q4 or newer is required.

Your scene works fine for me with the new HIP backend on an AMD 5500 XT. Therefore closing this report.
