System Information
Operating system: Arch Linux
Graphics card: GTX 980

Blender Version
Broken: 2.83.0 LTS
Worked: I just know that blender 2.7 series never crashed my machine while rendering and never had I had blender corrupt a file while not being saved?

Short description of error

While doing an F12 render, blender froze the whole OS and made the computer restart by itself. When I got back to the OS, all I had was a 0 byte corrupted blend file unable to be opened by blender.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

This is the corrupted file, I hope you can figure out what went wrong.

Can you update your report with .TXT file generated from Help > System Info? are you aware that Blender support only Nvidia propietary drivers on Linux?

Sadly we're unable to get much out of the attached .blend file at it has no data with in it (0 bytes).

However, the 0 byte issue suggests that you tried to save your .blend file and had to restart your computer part way through the saving process.

Blender automatically has a system in place for situations like these. In the same location as your original scene you should have a file with the extension .blend1. This should be a backup of your .blend file before the save. Rename it to a .blend file extension and try opening it.

While doing an F12 render, blender froze the whole OS and made the computer restart by itself

This suggests a hardware issue like an unstable overclock or memory or power supply or something. You may want to take a look into that. Not sure what advice I can give you in this department.

Looking at the libraries used, I have to ask: Is this your own custom build, or the Arch package one? The Arch package version is a custom build that has been causing issues for users.

I would suggest using the official build from https://www.blender.org/download/

Yes, this is the blender package from the Arch Linux repos.

I downclocked my CPU from 4.6 to 4.4 GHz and it seems to have fixed the problem. You never know when hardware will start failing ;\
