Viewport colors different from earlier Versions in older iMac #77818

System Information
Operating system: Darwin-16.7.0-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 4850 OpenGL Engine ATI Technologies Inc. 3.3 ATI-10.2.37

Blender Version
Broken: Version: 2.83 and 2.90.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-06-06 14:18, hash: aed11c673e
Worked: 2.82

The Viewport looks different,
it is quite dark, nearly black!

When I change the Viewport color to something brighter,
the dark Axis Color gets lost and the axis are dark grey.
In the preferences the default axis colors are set right.

When I Load Factory Settings,
the viewport gets nearly black again.

The error appears only on my old 2009 iMac.
I can not update the macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6 on my iMac anymore,,
but is there something else that could change the behavior of my Viewport?

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

There might also be an error in the render view ...

Looking again, ATI Radeon HD 4850 OpenGL is below the minimum requirements for Blender, so we no longer provide support for it. https://www.blender.org/download/requirements/
Installing the latest graphics driver sometimes helps to make such GPUs work, see here for more information. https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/gpu/index.html

Thank you Richard Antalik!

I started Blender from my terminal application,
but there was no error message in the window.
I have already the newest graphics driver etc. ...

I need Blender to work with my iMac,
because I need the very big 27 Display
and don't have the money to buy a new iMac yet!

Please make Blender work again with my older but good iMac!
I want to use the newest Versions of Blender
rather than stick to the latest working 2.82!

What did you change in Version 2.83
that it stopped working with my
ATI Radeon HD 4850 OpenGL?

Please write what changes you made in Version 2.83 from 2.82!
Maybe I or someone else can repair the code
of the new Blender Versions for hardware downwards compatibility ...

@ Stats: Unfortunately my iMac can NOT be updated anymore.
This late 2009 model allows only to update to macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6

Can you please help me to fix this Problem!
It would be so great to be able to use the latest Blender Versions ...

If you look at https:*support.apple.com/en-us/HT208969 your iMac is compatible with High Sirra 😊 Here is the download-link for HS --> https:*itunes.apple.com/de/app/macos-high-sierra/id1246284741?ls=1&mt=12

Today I installed the newest Blender 2.90.0 Alpha build
but I couldn't even start it anymore on my old macOS Sierra, because
there appears an new Infobox saying I have to update my OS to High Sierra.

After updating with the update-link you provided above,
(It worked well, thank you very much, Stas)
I started this newest Blender Version again,
but the missing axis colors and artifacts persist.

Bildschirmfoto 2020-06-27 um 15.36.05.png

What did you change in Version 2.83 from 2.82
so that >=2.83 do not work anymore on old Macs?
I don't want to be limited on my old iMac to Blender Version 2.82,
but rather use the newest Versions on my biggest and best display.^^

Let me know if I can help you in any way to solve this problem!

@genialica your hardware is very limited, on https://www.blender.org/download/requirements/ the minimum hardware requirements for GPUs are 1 GB RAM and AMD with GCN 1st gen and newer. I think yours is 512MB.

There is an option to upgrade your GPU to Radeon 6970 1GB or 2GB, but for that your iMac need to have i5/i7 CPU. --> https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+27-Inch+(Late+2009+or+Mid+2010)+Graphics+Card+Replacement/9553

Thank you Stas, but I think this is not necessary, when Version 2.82 worked.
Did the minimum hardware requirements for GPUs change from 2.82 -> 2.83?
Can you please find a downgrading fix for 2.90 that works like 2.82 does on my old Mac?

The minimum hardware requirements did not change. However we only have time and resources to fix bugs for supported hardware, even cases that used to work on unsupported hardware.

@genialica what you can do is debug/compile Blender directly on your machine, and then try to find the commit where the bug occurs on your Mac. git bisect is a good option to do that --> https://git-scm.com/docs/git-bisect#_basic_bisect_commands_start_bad_good
