Short description of error
Vetex Group has more than assigned

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Select the cube.
Enter in to editmode.
Select 2 Faces that are opposite each other.
Make a vertex group.
Assign the selected Faces to a vertex group.
Deselect all.
Click the select button on the Object Data Proprties panel.

Works also with all kinds of extruded shapes.

If you are selecting 2 opposite sides of a cube, you are selecting all the vertex on the cube, so it is working as intended. As the name say its groups for vertices not for faces. Unless you mean something else
