System Information
Operating system: Darwin-19.3.0-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon Pro 580 OpenGL Engine ATI Technologies Inc. 4.1 ATI-3.5.5

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.90.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-06-28 15:13, hash: b21ba5e579

Short description of error
The Select Circle tool regularly misses points when dragging over them in material preview or rendered viewing mode.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open the attached .blend file
  • Drag quickly over the line (solid mode), the points are correctly selected.
  • Switch to Material Preview and drag quickly over the line, not all points on the drag path are correctly selected.

Notes
For me the cursor movement (UI update?) has a much lower frame rate while in material preview or rendered viewing mode. So while dragging quickly over the points in a stroke, some points never overlap the select circle radius on any of the frames of the drag. And it looks like the position of the Select Circle isn't being interpolated between frames.

This means that points don't get selected that should have been, so I have to make the selection again.

In solid or wireframe mode the FPS is high enough that no points are missed, but these modes are often not good enough to get a proper feel for the image i'm working on.

A video showing the result i'm getting (see low FPS in material preview mode despite being a very simple scene) Screen Recording 2020-07-21 at 09.47.00.mov

I cannot reproduce on Windows. The speed of the mouse depends on the capacity of the CPU to process the events, so I cannot do too much here.

@filedescriptor Can you reproduce it?

I tested on 2.91.0 Alpha 62e53788aa master.

So I was able to reproduce the bug (points are not selected while moving fast in circle select), but I did not experience any lag whatsoever. For me the points are not selected when I move really fast (I have to flick the mouse). This is also the case for meshes. I believe the lag issue is not related to grease pencil, but most likely EEVEE/Workbench performance on the users system, which slows down the UI. On the other hand, the circle select is not checking for selection in-between modal updates (only the radius of a single update). The question is if that is a bug, or a limitation.

IMHO this is a limitation of the event processing. I had similar issues drawing very fast a stroke. IIRC there is a patch in progress to get high frequency events.

Should we confirm this as known issue then? Otherwise we shold close this.
