System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.4.0-7634-generic-x86_64-with-debian-bullseye-sid 64 Bits
Graphics card: Quadro RTX 6000/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 440.100

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-07-27 07:06, hash: 6d42ffe03c
Worked: unknown

Short description of error
The viewport overlays for normals break with large amounts of hidden geometry
Screenshot from 2020-07-27 11-35-24.png
They work fine without hidden geometry
Screenshot from 2020-07-27 11-39-46.png
But break as soon as a lot of geometry is hidden
Screenshot from 2020-07-27 11-39-58.png

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
From startup file:

  1. subdivide the default cube mutiple times in edit mode
  2. dupicate it mutiple times in edit mode
  3. turn on the overlay for normals
  4. hide all but one of the cubes

From example file:

Cannot reproduce with the file provided:

Doing it from scratch does give me artifacts though (somtimes more lines, sometimes less...):

Most noticable on panning:
