Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Add a cube.
(Optional) Make sure AutoSmooth is disabled.
Enter Sculpt mode.
Enable Dynatopo
Disable Smooth Normals.
Enable Smooth Normals.
Choose Mask Brush and continously paint a mask on the cube.... Hard crash..

Here a video of above steps with crash and without crash on same version.

Cannot reproduce here

System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.7.10-201.fc32.x86_64-x86_64-with-fedora-32-Thirty_Two 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 970M/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 440.100
version: 2.91.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-07-30 07:45, hash: 742ad5acbc (also tested 2.83.3)

Just to make sure:

  • are GPU drivers up to date? [which driver version are you using?]
  • does this happen wit factory Defaults as well?
  • does this happen in a fresh build from https://builder.blender.org/download/ as well?

Gpu drivers are the latest available for the card (non beta or non alpha) (its a an old card).

Edit : Gpu Drivers version 15.301.1901.0

Edit 2: I checked the website for drivers again, the site shows a 15.7 driver but when trying to install it says the latest drivers (15.301.1901) are installed and wont let me override the drivers. So this might be the WHQL driver supported for this card; maybe 7800+series or higher cards might be able to install that driver; but I'm not able to.

But I tested with factory defaults as well; first time on a non subdivided cube it seemed to work; then I re-tested (fresh Blender execution, fresh defaults). This time I added a bevel modifier, subdivided the default cube 6 levels and applied the modifiers. Then I redid the exact steps and could reproduce again. So the number of vertices might play a factor here...

Edit: Tested with a nightly build from buildbot. 2.90.0-a8d058dbf42f-windows64 can also reproduce it on that version.

It might be best to just share that file here (makes sure we are all on the same page...)

Thanks for the report. This GPU is below the minimum requirements for Blender, so there is no longer support for it. https://www.blender.org/download/requirements/

Installing the latest graphics driver sometimes helps to make such GPUs work, see here for more information. https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/gpu/index.html

If that doesn't help, you can use Blender 2.79: https://www.blender.org/download/previous-versions/
