System Information
Operating system: Darwin-19.4.0-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits - MacOS Catalina 10.15.4 (19E287)
Graphics card: AMD Radeon Pro 560X OpenGL Engine ATI Technologies Inc. 4.1 ATI-3.8.24

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.83.3, branch: master, commit date: 2020-07-22 06:01, hash: 353e5bd749
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
MacOS only allows one instance of blender open. When working on large projects, I need to switch between several .blend files that link data back to a set of master files. After going to file/open or opening from recent several times (Maybe 5-6 times max), an error comes up:

Unable to open '/Volumes/workdesk_A/matterhorn/working/BLENDER/_ASSETS/_LAYOUTS_main.blend': Too many open files

From that point on I'm unable to save the blend file and am forced to restart - which fixes it. Another symptom is the disappearance of directories in the open/save dialog.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

Too many open files

Not a Mac guy, but....
The maximum number of open files is a system or per user setting in a lot of operating systems.
Maybe there is a MacOS setting for this?

This is certainly not a bug in Blender, this is a report from the OS.

  • You can run multiple instances of Blender from the Terminal.
  • The number of open files you're allowed can be increased, look for ulimit -n.

Or you can just keep multiple Blender.app files, this makes it easy to run multiple instances.

@jpmonroyal Can you test above suggestions and report if they were sucessful?

I don't have mac to test and don't want to close without feedback.

Note that this could be a resource leak in Blender or an Add-on failing to close files.

  • Can you redo this error with factory settings loaded?
  • Can you use a process monitor that shows open files while Blender runs? This way you can see which files are being left open.
