GPencil - visibility of masked layer effected by onion skin settings #79623

System Information
Operating system: Darwin-19.3.0-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon Pro 580 OpenGL Engine ATI Technologies Inc. 4.1 ATI-3.5.5

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-08-06 23:23, hash: 21fec95139

Short description of error
Turning on onion skinning, with a low opacity, on a layer that masks another causes the masked layer on the current frame to display very faintly. Expected: turning on onion skinning doesn't affect the opacity of the layers visible at the current frame.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. open attached blend.
  2. turn on onion skinning for the 'eye' layer.
  3. the pupil image becomes very faint (as though it's being effected by the onionskin visibility settings)

Not totally sure, but I think this is a limitation of the masking. The masking is done using "pixels" not geometry, so for the layer on top, there are pixels of the previous layer. For the mask, it's impossible to determine if the pixels are from "real" strokes or "onion" stokes, they are just pixels for masking.

@fclem can you confirm?

AFAIK this is a limitation and cannot be solved, so we can close it. If we back in the future with new solution/design, we can reopen it or open a new task.

I'm experiencing this issue, but it doesn't work as I would expect based on that explanation. The mask seems to be applied based on the onion skin frame instead of the current frame (not as well as the current frame).
