Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
When I install the Microsoft Store version of Blender the preview doesn't work in File Explorer and the .blend file icons are broken.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Install Blender from the Microsoft Store
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

Just a heads-up.. Somehow Blender icons now appear but still without preview. I'm sending a screenshot of .blend files saved from blender.org and MS Store Blender versions.
As you can see blender.org version shows a preview icon and MS Store shows the Blender logo.
Also, the preview pane in File Explorer no longer shows the preview for any Blender version.

Just a heads-up.. Somehow Blender icons now appear but still without preview. I'm sending a screenshot of .blend files saved from blender.org and MS Store Blender versions. As you can see blender.org version shows a preview icon and MS Store shows the Blender logo. Hi Richard.

Here's the .blend saved with blender.org installer:
Downloaded.blend

..and a similar .blend saved with the MS Store Blender:
Store.blend

A few additional things. When Blender (blender.org installer) is installed in a new Win10 system, there's no preview in file explorer. Each time I re-install Win10 and Blender I have to use this solution from 2015 to have previews in file explorer:

This solution doesn't work with MS Store Blender.
Previews are extremely important to keep me organized and I can't work without them.

Also, and this is a minor aesthetic thing, MS Store Blender start menu icon is HUGE! compared with most other apps icons.

I know, I know.. this isn't a functional issue. But, as a designer and 3D artist, this hurts my feelings!

I was trying the MS Store Blender because of the automatic updates. But if there's no solution for these issues I rather keep using the blender.org version.

Manual thumbnail registration is known issue. I had to do the process to check on your files, but I wasn't able to reproduce - I see thumbnail of both files

Can you run blender.exe -r command again and check if this is still an issue?

For other issues like big start menu entry, please open new report I may not be able to check, because I try to make my system look like win95 to this day.

I've tried that registration fix before I've reported this issue and it didn't work. At least in my machine, it only works for the blender.org installer.

I've already uninstalled the store version and I'm sticking with the installer version as my initial idea was to save time with the automatic updates but I'm losing time instead trying to solve this.

That "registration fix" should work with all blender versions. In any case there is #45389 where this should be handled on some level. If it doesn't work that could be the source of this problem, but we would need to have reproducible case to check this. Do you have link to previous report by chance?

Since you have uninstalled store version, and you can't really check this any further I will have to close this report.
