System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.4.0-48-generic-x86_64-with-debian-buster-sid 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 390.138
Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-10-06 20:17, hash:
099ce95ef3
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)
Short description of error
"Lossless" rendered sequences only play as expected with Linux-Player "Celluloid". VLC and Kaffeine give bad results. This problem exists a while now. Sorry i waited so long to report it.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Render some frames. It does not matter what format you use (AVI, Quick, MP4,...) with setting "lossless".
Play the clip with VLC or Kaffeine.
Lossless_Celluloid.mp4
Lossless_VLC.mp4
Lossless_Kaffeine.mp4
To avoid this, i usually use "perceptually lossless" instead.

Can't reproduce this on windows.
Please upload simple .blend file that has this issue and also upload small rendered video.
Lossless vid bug.mp4
Lossless vid bug.blend
I added the video, but on my side this page lookes like this:
These are the settings i chose:
And this is the same render, only set to "perceptually lossless":
Perceptually lossless0001-0024.mp4
Thanks for info.
I have downloaded
Lossless_vid_bug.mp4
and I had no issues playing that video in VLC. Same if I render video myself. But I have noticed, that the video can not be played back in web browser, again same happens when I render video myself.
Ffprobe shows
I thought that
yuv420p
pixel format is not correct here, but usingyuv444p
did not change anything.Still I am not convinced that this is bug in Blender.
@user1 Please click on "messages" or press Ctrl+M in VLC, open problematic video file and post output here.
VLC sais:
"egl_x11 error: cannot select OpenGL API

Sorry for late response.
I suspect this could be caused by HW decoder. Unfortunately I don't have enough expertise in codecs and time to learn about what is problem here.

Reopening because I think this should be checked.
I think we could check if this bug is caused by Blender by rendering series of images into movie with same settings, once in VSE then with ffmpeg alone. then it will be either ffmpeg bug or decoder.
I will try to check this.
Changed status from 'Needs Triage' to: 'Archived'
I have encoded series of images into video with command
ffmpeg.exe -r 24 -f image2 -s 1280x720 -i %04d.png -c:v libx264 -crf 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p test.mp4
ffprobe shows
Same problem as with video encoded with Blender.
Therefore this is either bug in ffmpeg or decoder.
