System Information
Operating system: Cross platform (tested on Windows 10 and Mac OS Catalina too)
Graphics card: not related

Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.80, edbf15d3c0, master, 2018-11-28, as found on the splash screen)
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
When using Linked Duplicates faces and edges count doesnt' count the new geometry added.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

  1. Select the default cube : status bar stats displays 8 verts 12 triangles and 6 faces, three objects (camera, light, cube), XMB mem

  2. "Duplicate linked" a cube (alt d) bar stats displays still 8 verts 12 triangles and 6 faces, four objects (camera, light, two cubes), X+Y MB mem instead of 16 , 24, 12 (2x verts, 2x tris, 2x faces)

Doing on the original cube an Object-> Relations -> Make single user -> Objects and data displays correct stats again but losing the links with the second cube.

Note: this behavior doesn't happens when doing array modifier or normal duplicating (SHIFT+D) in this case stas are properly updated.

The fact that it doesn't take in account the new geoms added makes the stats not correct to evaluate the size of the scene in terms of complexity, so when exporting eg: FBX stats for this new file dsiplay the correct verts, afces and triangles number.

Linked Duplicates means that multiple Objects are sharing the same ObData. If 100 MeshObjects are sharing the same plane MeshData, there are only 4 verts, 4 edges and 1 face in the .blend. This is the whole point of Linked Duplicates.

The numbers are a count of what is actually in the .blend, not what will get exported into another format.

This is not a bug. It is how Blender works.
Closing with the annoying Invalid status.
Thanks for reporting.
