System Information
Operating system: Windows-7-6.1.7601-SP1 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 970/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 457.09

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-11-03 00:00, hash: 3049704b15
Worked: 2.91

Short description of error
Not a bug, but a bore. When selecting a new object, Blender now always selects the "Object properties" tab (orange icon) in the Properties panel.
When for instance working with fluid, having constantly to alternate from Emitter to Domain, it is a bore to have to reselect every time the "Physics Properties". It was never so in the previous versions.

It is because of the new feature "Outliner-Properties syncing", now depending on where you click (object's name, modifier icon, object data icon, material etc.) it will automatically change the properties section. I can understand that it's a big change and can cause some troubles like this, but there are a lot of other situations where this feature actually speeds up a lot the process of dealing with multiple objects, modifiers and constraints. I'd say though that it could be good to have an option to disable it, or at least to add physics and particles icons to the outliner so that the sync happens also for them. For now, what you can do is have the properties panel not sharing an edge with the outliner (basically have the two editors detached), in that case the sync no longer happens.

Thanks for your reply. I did what you said, placing the properties somewhere else and it works, but it changes my screen config and I don't like it. An option would be great !!!

No problem. Anyway, for the future I'd suggest you to post these observations on devtalk, as here is specifically for bug reporting.

Yep, this is working as intended, see the review process in D8638: Outliner: Add properties editor sync on selection

For user requests and feedback, please use other channels: https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Communication/Contact#User_Feedback_and_Requests
For more information on why this isn't considered a bug, visit: https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Reference/Not_a_bug

Will raise awareness to @Zachman, but will close as not-a-bug
