Hi,

Are you still experiencing crashes with 2.91 & Big Sur 11.1 or have you reverted to 2.90.1? Trying to figure the most stable Blender version to install for BS 11.1. Thanks

I always have the same problem with Blender 2.91 so I'm working with 2.90.1 ver.

I have had very frequent crashes with Blender 2.91/2.92 on an iMac 27" with AMD Radeon graphics card, running Big Sur, to the point that 2.92 was for me unusable. The crash appeara to be several levels down in the AMD graphics driver (com.apple.AMDRadeonX4000GLDriver)—usually a divide-by-zero exception. So I went back to using Blender 2.83.12, which did not trigger the crashes. And then I was delighted when Mac OS 11.3 came out a week ago, because the driver bug seemed to have been fixed, and Blender 2.92 worked fine again. However today (May 4) I downloaded and installed the Mac OS 11.3.1 update (which fixes a Mac OS security issue), and the same driver bug is back!! Blender 2.92 crashed immediately once again. So I suspect, as usual, that Apple's software quality control is at fault, and they rushed out this update without some of the recent bug fixes that were included in 11.3. With luck there will soon be an 11.3.2 update that pulls all the bug fixes together. Of course a Blender workaround must be possible, because 2.83.12 works. And also by the way I don't get these crashes with my laptop that's still running Mac OS Mojave, with either 2.92 or 2.83.12.

Here's a typical crash log from Blender 2.92 and Mac OS 11.2.3 (from a few weeks ago):

I've also noticed that stability with Blender under 11.3 is dramatically improved. Very concerned to hear that it's broken again under 11.3.1. Please keep us updated once 11.3.2 drops. I will be sure not to update until I hear about the fix returning.

Is this bug with Big Sur 11.3.1 something that we can report to Apple? How do we do this? Or has it already been reported?

Apple automatically gets crash logs (probably many thousands per day of course). I think it's probably a waste of time for any of us except an official Blender developer to report this bug to Apple—someone who could likely point to exactly what the problem is. I for example couldn't really add anything to a report that isn't already clear from the crash logs.

Good to know. Thanks for the info!

I'm now running Mac OS 11.4. And the news is still bad. The AMD graphics driver bug that was fixed in 11.3, and unfixed once again in 11.3.1, is still unfixed in 11.4. (So if you don't have other reasons to update your OS, use Blender a lot, and are still running 11.3, I'd suggest staying there. I wish I could downgrade, but one can no longer download the 11.3 installer from Apple as far as I know).

For what it is worth, when I run a self-built Blender from the master branch, under Xcode or not, I very rarely get crashes.

But somewhat alarmingly, if I make Xcode use the Clang address sanitizer when compiling and running Blender, now and then that catches some problem. Unfortunately the code involved is too complicated for me to be able to fix it in the time I have. (I am spending my free time on using Blender.)

Is this bug still present in 2.83 LTS using Big Sur 11.4? Im getting crashes in 2.93 that I don't get in 2.83, and that's with Bug Sur 11.3 (no way Im upgrading at this point...)

Blender 2.83 LTS has been almost entirely stable for me, including with Big Sur 11.4 (2.83.12 is what I'm using most of the time currently). I wonder what it says if 2.93 is now crashing under 11.3... maybe a different bug altogether. I've discovered that if I boot my iMac from a small partition that has Mac OS Mojave installed, all versions of Blender that I've tried work fine. You could try booting under Mojave or Catalina to get more evidence of where the problems are.

Tor thank you for your comment on locally-compiled Blender. I might try that one of these days!

This makes me wonder if changes to Eevee since 2.83 are the root cause of the crashing issues.

@UmbertoOldani hi, can you still reproduce on daily builds?: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily
Also provide crash logs if recent version is not helpful: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/crash.html#crash-log
