Cannot Install Some Addons #83824

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 Pro
Graphics card: nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 TI

Blender Version
Broken: 2.91
Worked: Problem has occurred through several versions

When I attempt to install some addons via the usual procedure, I may wait several minutes before I see the Activation screen --- if I see it at all. I get the blue insert on the bottom task bar stating that the addon has been added, and the unzipped version of that addon appears in
"Users>Dan>AppData>Roaming>Blender Foundation>Blender>2.91>scripts>addons?xxxxx.py"
but does not appear in the list of installed addons in Preferences.

Most of my addons come from BlenderMarket or GitHub; Windows and all it's drivers are up-to-date; and I try downloading the latest version of the addon. One particularly troublesome addon is CircularArray-master CircularArray-master.zip (see attached)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
As described above

This is not a bug. Some zipped add-ons are not properly set for direct installation from the zip file. If the add-on is just a single xxxx.py file, it should be packed singularly. In the contrary, if it is made of more that a single python script, these should be placed inside a dedicated folder, and the main script should be named

__init__.py

(with two underscores before and after init).
If you check the content of the zip file you attached, the "singular file script" is placed inside a folder but there is no "init.py" and Blender don't know how to handle it after you install it. You have two solutions: 1) extract the single xxxx.py file somewhere, then run the installation procedure in Blender, choosing this single python script; 2) go to your add-ons folder and look for the CircularArray-master directory that has been created when you installed the add-on; inside it you will find the CircularArray.py script, rename it to init.py. These steps should solve your problem.

What @Harvester said is correct. Downloading the current state of the repository as .zip from GitHub is most of them time not what you want to be doing. Check the release section instead which should provide a properly prepared .zip that you can install. If no such release is provided then you need to follow the instructions @Harvester has provided. For more information see the following answers on Blender's Stack Exchange:
