System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: Zotac GTX 1050 ti OC 4GB

Blender Version
Broken: ( since blender-2.80.0-git.27adc4aa3347-windows64)
current version :blender-2.92.0-5424b4821d28-windows64

Short description of error

there is no AO baking in Bake from Multires option
but it still bakes AO from Multires if I uncheck the box of Bake from Multires

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

  • subdivide the cube 3 times
  • apply subdivision
  • apply multires modifer 3 times
  • sculpt a bunch of stuff
  • leave sculpt mode
  • apply material
  • using cycles bake color image texture AO

and uploaded a video file to show the process step by step
PS : please make the option avalible to bake an AO map from Multires modifier, my workflow depends on it and it is super useful, don't just remove it, am still using Blender 2.79 for that option alone.2021-01-07 08-17-37.mp4

Isnt this because Multires is still set to the higher level for rendering in the modifier?
It is the same for normals, you dont necessarily need the Bake From Multires, it works without (but uses more memory etc.)

Relevant commits:

Note that in 2.79, this multires AO optimization was for Blender Internal renderer, will check if Cycles supports any kind of multires optimization for AO (if there isnt, then this is not a bug)

From what I can tell, AO baking is not supported with the multires baker optimizations in Cycles, so you are left with is the "regular" baking [in which you would e.g. see other objects as well]

It has been noted as a TODO in 51b796ff15, see https://developer.blender.org/diffusion/B/browse/master/source/blender/render/intern/multires_bake.c$1428

/* TODO: restore ambient occlusion baking support. */

Soooo, this is not a bug, @brecht : do you want to keep this as a TODO task? Could not find this mentioned anywhere...
If not, this could be closed.

I have no immediate plans to bring back multires AO baking.

I'm not sure that it is an important optimization. We do intend to change the baking workflow so that it's easier to bake AO without having to switch that Bake From Multires option.
