Nouveau drivers apparently depreciated by Blender change in 2.83 #85721

System Information
Operating system: Fedora 33 LXDE
Graphics card: ASUS Nvidia GT 710

Blender Version
Broken: 2.83 onward
Worked: 2.82a

Short description of error
abort after startup

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
install standard Fedora LXDE distro
load and run Blender version 2.83a - confirms not broken
without changes to environment
load and run any Blender version after 2.82a - confirms broken

See attached crash report.

Note. This bug was submitted in May 2020 as #76583 and closed as Invalid by a maintainer. It was submitted again independently in Feb 2021 as #85677 by a different user and closed by them based on the assessment by the maintainer who referred to the fault being caused by the Nouveau nv50_ir driver that appeared in the crash report. The assessment as a Nouveau fault appears to be based solely on the abend report and not as a review of Blender change history. Further testing confirms the original report as being valid as logicaly only a change in Blender can account for the transition from working to abending on the exact same environment within minutes. With respect, the eventuality of Blender becoming nonviable on a popular Linux platform has implications for its user base and either a fix or a workaround (e.g. using closed NVIDIA Drivers as an alternative) seems appropriate.

The assessment that the bug is in the Nouveau drivers is based on the error message, by itself that indicates an internal in the driver. The bug report for this in the Nouveau bug tracker is still open. Of course changes in Blender can make such bugs apparent, the question is if we want to work around those bugs. We make such decisions on a case-by-case basis.

For NVIDIA GPUs on Linux, the official recommendation (as also mentioned in the Blender manual) is to use the closed source drivers which do work. We are not currently considering Nouveau drivers to be the officially supported way to run Blender, and so this is not considered a bug we intend to fix in Blender.
