Grease Pencil soft edge stroke glitch in some view angles #86048

Short description of error
When a grease pencil stroke / brush is soft or has transparency (object A) and put against another grease pencil object (object B). At certain viewing angles, object B becomes invisible around the edges of object A.

This happens in all three render engines, in viewport and renders, in version 2.91 and 2.92.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open the attached file
  • Look from the camera view to see the glitch in the stroke edge
  • you can also move with the middle mouse button until the same happens in certain viewing angles.
  • this should happen in 3 view modes, using 3 render engines, in viewport and renders, in version 2.91 and 2.92.

Could you try to move your cloud object a little to front. It looks in some angles the position of the objects makes teh drawing engine not able to decide the right z-depth. If I do that in my system, the problem is solved.

Tip: If for any artist reason, you cannot move the objects, then move only the origin of the cloud object.

Thank you very much. That seemed to fix it but when I played with it more it happened again as in this updated file :

In another case even putting the tree far from the houses produced the same result, but changing the origin of the houses to their geometry seemed to fix it :

Fixed :

If the tree is close to the houses, fixing the houses origin and moving the tree origin far away seems to fix most of the glitches, but not all :

Looking at this again (sorry this took so long to answer)
This is still the same problem:

  • the origins have to be separated far enough in Z-distance from the camera
  • when swinging the camera around this will change of course (so there might not be a single case of setting the origins that works from all camera angles)
  • so in the following case (and from that camera angle), the tree origin and the purple house origin are so that it is not clear the tree is in front of the house anymore [can be fixed (for this camera angle) by moving the origin of the tree by minus 0.5 in X]

  • dont have a .blend file for palm trees, but assume the problem there is the same
