"File Output" node does not saves anything #87292

Operating system: MacOs BigSur

Blender Version
Broken: 2.93.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-04-06 21:02, hash: e0a1a2f49d
Caused by 6524ceb8cf

note #87252 might be a duplicate but has slightly different symptoms.

Steps:

  1. Open attached blend with simple scene.
    There is 2 frames (animation, frame 1 and frame 2) and some post-processing in compositor for it with one key feature: There is a "File Output" node that saves various layers of rendered view layers into single EXR file. This file output node is inside group
  2. Tab into group and set proper output path for "File output" node
  3. Execute "Render Animation" and wait

Expected Result: Rendering should save 0001.exr with full render data for first frame and 0002.exr with full render data for second frame. It also should save EXR at path from "File Output" node, with exr fields containing connected values/colors for each frame (so two more EXR files should be present after render)

In Reality: 0001.exr and 0002.exr are saved well, but "File Output" node produce nothing //

Seems to be unrelated. The issue is that the first connected socket determines the resolution of the output file. As this socket is not connected to anything it just doesn't save the image. Not sure why the mentioned commit is the cause, it seems to be always the case.

Dont get it. In ExrOutputNode.blend all sockets of the FileOutput node seem to be connected?
(just plain bisecting showed that 6524ceb8cf was the first failing commit...)

Ah I switched to EEVEE as I was working on a debug build. But somehow there are 5 input socket and the compositor connects them to 9 source.
Next week will look at all the exceptions that have been added for the file output node and see what is failing and what works.
