Blender on Mac now offers two versions: Intel and ARM
The Intel version is designed for Intel Macs, like yours.
The ARM version is designed for ARM Macs like the M1 Macbooks and Mac mini (and presumably all future Macs for the foreseeable future)

Due to the differences between ARM and Intel Macs, the different versions of Blender are incompatible with the other type of Mac.
So the Intel version of Blender will only work on Intel Macs and the ARM version of Blender will only work on ARM Macs.
Because you have a Intel Mac, you can only use the Intel version and the ARM one not working or installing isn't considered an issue. I will archive this report.

Note: I am over-simplifying things. And some of this information is kind of false. But the general idea is the same. @Kent-Davis should install the Intel version of Blender because you're using a Intel Mac.

I can't give you an exact number and I can't guarantee anything since I'm not a developer and can not tell the future, but I believe that the Intel version of Blender for Mac will continue to receive updates for another 10 years? However, this time frame may be extended or decreased depending on a variety of factors that we just don't know about at this current point in time.
