Geometry Nodes Disappear when we Enable Physics, but Remain Intact #87665

Operating system: Windows 10 64bit Pro
Graphics card: GeForce 970 GTX
Blender 2.92.0

When we enabled Physics on an Object that is using Geometry Nodes, all of the Nodes disappear from the Geometry Nodes window and can no longer be access from the dropdown. They remain intact and will re-appear when we disable the physics. This only seems to happen when we use Collision, Cloth, Dynamic Paint, Soft Body or Fluid. This does not happen when we use Force Field, Rigid Body or Rigid Body Constraints. If we disable physics the nodes re-appear unchanged.

Furthermore when we enter this state, we can still create New Geometry Nodes that will work as expected. And oddly, once we've created new Geometry Nodes, THEN we can choose the previously hidden Geometry Node from the dropdown while physics are still active. BUT if we disable then re-enable, or enable other physics, the nodes will all disappear again. This will continue to happen in the same way if we enable more physics and create more Geometry Nodes.

Steps to replicate:

  1. Create a new Object (or use default cube)
  2. On Geometry Node screen click New, then create any valid geometry no setup (I only used a basic setup seen here from a tutorial
  3. Select your main object, navigate to the Physics tab then enable a physics type: Collision, Cloth, Dynamic Paint, Softe Body or Fluid.
Notice the Geometry nodes disappear and can no longer be access but they continue to work without a problem.
  4. Click the X to disable any of the above Physics types. Notice the Geometry Node all re-appear again.
  5. Re-enable physics so that the Nodes disappear again. Once they disappear create a New Geometry Node. Notice, this works. Also notice, that now we can also select the previous hidden Geometry Nodes.
  6. Enabled yet another Physics type. Notice they all disappear again. IF we disabled it again, notice the it reveals them again, even though some physics are still active.

I think it is not a bug, it is just the active modifier being set to the physics modifier

Right, not a bug. Thanks for the report though, I can see why it's confusing.

This is always going to be weird while we have physics modifiers in a separate property editor tab. I'm really not sure why it's like that in the first place. Anyway, eventually it will be better as node based physics systems are added.

Ooh. I see. That is helpful to know. Would be nice if there was a solution to this for quality of life sake. Like an Icon we could click from the Geometry Node toolbar. Thank for clearing that up at least.
