System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.8.0-50-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.31 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 465.19.01

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-05-02 13:56, hash: d8fdb06a81
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
When trying to control the parameters of a material of a linked object with drivers, there are no updates, i.e. it doesn't work.
It doesn't matter if the source of the driver is an empty, a bone or a custom property (or whatnot).

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Download the two attached blend files
  • Open the "Material_Rig_v01.blend". (It contains a linked and overridden collection from the "LIB_Material_Rig_v01.blend". Basically it's a cube with a Principled Shader on which the "Emission Strength" is controlled by the X-position of the bone of an Armature).
  • Click start render preview, (e.g. by pressing Z + up in the viewport)
  • Select the single bone (in pose mode) and slide it to the right (its movement is constrained so you can't break anything)
Nothing changes, the cube stays grey (bug)
  • Now open the source of the linked "rig", namely "LIB_Material_Rig_v01.blend"
  • Start preview rendering again and move the bone
It works as expected -> the bone's x-position drives the "Emission Strength" as expected and the cube starts to get brighter

I already tried using custom properties or empties as a replacement for a bone. Same result.

Quick update: If I link the collection to a scene and use "Make Proxy" instead of "Make Library Override" everything works as expected...

OK, this seems to be "fixed" with this commit: https://developer.blender.org/rB6899dbef77cd26df3588888040887e4e41c1ec43

This appears to be a duplicate of the #82404 (Library Overrides: Shader drivers stop working after save and reload).
The difference is that here instead of changing a property through the UI, the property is the position of the bone.

@SteffenD : since the hack-workaround should be working now, would you consider this resolved?

For me it works, so I would say yes :)
