System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.10.15-1-MANJARO-x86_64-with-glibc2.33 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD TURKS (DRM 2.50.0 / 5.10.15-1-MANJARO, LLVM 11.0.1) X.Org 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 20.3.4

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-05-02 20:40, hash: 5ffab01930
Worked: 2.79, commit date: 2019-06-27 'e045fe53f1b0'

Short description of error
The mesh deform modifier creates an artefact when transferring over a 2.7 rig file.
As in the mesh object becomes a distorted, twisted, pointy thing.
Additional error is that binding level needs to be higher in order to deform correct.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open attached file or
  • In blender 2.79 add a subdivision modifier (level 1) to the Cube
  • Add an object (eg Suzane) and scale to be inside the Cube
  • To the new object, add the MeshDeform modifier and bind to the Cube
  • Save and close the file to open in a newer version of Blender

To fix issue unbind mesh deform modifier from mesh object and rebind.
This same error occurred to 'Nathan Rig' when moving from blender 2.49 to 2.5

Can you try to identify the exact versions where it broke? You can find a list of versions here: https://download.blender.org/release/.

I can confirm. The problem is related to the subdivision modifier. It's not a recent regression. The same problem can be seen when opening a file saved in 2.79 in Blender 2.80.
I'll edit the description to indicate the minimum steps needed.

I edited the description and also replaced the file with a more simplified one.
The previous one was this:
mesh_deform_2.7--_2.8.blend
