Rig has no effect on linked overridden object when opening the file after save #88213

If a linked object is overridden and parented to a bone, the parenting will not take effect after saving the file and reopening it again.

Minimal reproduction steps:

  • Save the default cube into a file.
  • Link the previously saved cube into a new file.
  • Make the cube an override.
  • Add a bone and match it with the cube.
  • Parent the cube to the bone with automatic weights.
  • Pose the bone, the cube moves. Good.
  • Save the file and reopen it.
  • Pose the bone, the cube doesn't moves. Bad.

Short description of error
I have a 3 file set up I am using to have a mesh, rig and animations in separate files for clarity of operation. In the Animations file, the rigify rig and the mesh connection seems to be missing. In the Object Properties -> Relations for the mesh it shows that the rig is the parent. If I go into pose mode, the mesh doesn't follow the rig. I can reparent the mesh to the rig in Object mode, but this is tedious. This happens every time I open the Animations file.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Create a character file in blender - this is the Mesh.blend file attached.
  2. Create a rig file in blender, I am using the Basic Human Rigify Meta Rig for my starting point - this is the RigifyRig.blend file attached.
  3. File -> Link the Mesh file to the RigifyRig file
  4. Change the Mesh linked in relations to be Library Override
  5. Create the rigify rig in the rig file
  6. Parent the mesh to the rig using automatic weights
  7. Check that the rig and mesh are connected.
  8. Change the rig id custom property to have the "Is Library Overridable" checked.
  9. Save the file.
  10. Create an animations blender file - this is the Animations.blend file attached.
  11. File -> Link the RigifyRig file to the Animations file.
  12. Change the linked RigifyRig to have relations to be Library Override
  13. Go into Pose mode and move the rig, the mesh doesn't follow the rig
  14. Parent the mesh to the rig.
  15. Save the file
  16. Reopen the file
  17. Go into pose mode the mesh doesn't follow the rig
  18. Check the relations on the mesh and see that it has the rig as a parent

It seems something is getting "forgotten" or not setup completely in the 3rd file about the connection between the mesh and the rig.

I don't have this when I use a simple armature in the same set up. I have both in the project I am working on.

No bug here, 'Parent the cube to the bone with automatic weights.' creates vgroups in the cubemesh, which is a linked data I think at that pint... And even if not, adding (or editing for what matters) vgroups to a liboverride is totally not supported.
