System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.12.6-300.fc34.x86_64-x86_64-with-glibc2.33 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super with Max-Q Design/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 465.27

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0, branch: unknown, commit date: 1970-01-01 00:00, hash: rBunknown
Worked: flatpak 2.92.0 is working fine

Short description of error
Cycles render crash with any device (CPU/GPU).

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Start Blender.
  2. If default cube is not on the scene add one or any other mesh.
  3. Change render engine to Cycles.
  4. Render (F12).

Hello Blender Team,

I'm having weird crash issues while rendering with Cycles. Eevee rendering does fine. I've tried to render the default cube mesh and as well deleting and adding a cube or a sphere mesh with no textures applied. I'm not using any add-ons. For the sake of experiment I've reset the settings to defaults though the settings haven't been changed a lot since I've just started using Blender after a break on a newly installed system. I'm using Fedora 34 KDE with KWin windows manager.

I could not try older rpm blender packages as it broke some dependencies which I was not eager to resolve. But I've managed to discover that latest flatpak version which is 2.92.0 (the same as the crashing rpm package) is working fine.
Though I would still like to have a working rpm to test the performance differences and to have easier upgrades.

The crash file is attached: blender.crash.txt

The version and commit date in the header of this report were generated automatically using Blender "Report bug" feature inside the application. The same information is show using "About Blender" dialog.

The values from terminal could be a bit more helpful:

> blender -v

I do not believe the RPM packages or Flatpack packages are "official Blender packages". Instead the best way to ensure you are using an official version of Blender is to download it from the Blender website or the official distribution methods for Blender. Please try one of these and see if it helps:
Blender website: https://www.blender.org/download/
Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/365670/Blender/
Snap: snap install blender

How to install Blender is described here: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/getting_started/installing/index.html

If you continue to experience issues, you may want to try one of the latest "daily builds" (2.93 or 3.0) as they include many bug fixes. They can be downloaded from here:
https://builder.blender.org/download/

As a last resort you can try building Blender from source, however if the official installs of Blender aren't working, then you're probably dealing with an issue outside of Blender (unstable overclock or other things) and this process of building from source probably won't help.

Just for information, I am running the daily builds of Blender 2.93 beta (and before that alpha) on both Fedora 33 and 34, rendering the default cube on CPU only, not having a decent GPU at this moment. Renders as expected.

Thank you guys,

I will go on with Snap package if it's more reliable than Flatpak in terms of Blender. But I would not prefer to go with builds or other manually managed binaries. I prefer to have a dedicated package manager to track things for me.

Snap package of Blender is working fine so far.
