Expansion of the "Refresh Data-Block Previews" operator's functionality #90961

If we consider its current implementation from the point of view of user experience, the operator has limited functionality. Let's start with regular users who just open the File menu.

  • Based on the operators that are in the same section ("Data Previews"), it is expected to see a similar set of options for operators with unidirectional functionality. In this case, we are talking about the "Clear Data-Block Previews" operator - it has options for choosing the type of data blocks to be processed. This is quite an important option for larger projects, since there can be quite a lot of data-blocks in one file and, for example, the user needs to update the preview data only for images, without processing the preview of materials. Those, the essence of this thesis is to add a filter option also for the operator "Refresh Data-Block Previews".

  • The next important aspect is that the operator completely locks the interface until complete execution. For example, if you just open the list of images, then the previews are generated in the background, which is more acceptable also when working with large datasets. Therefore, it is expected that the operator will update the preview in the same way, in the background.

  • From the point of view of programmers who use the operator to write add-ons, it is obvious that it is enough to simply enter a few simple options when calling.

It's unclear to me why this task was created or planned for the Blender 3.0 release.

Design and to do task are should be created either by module owners and members, or in cooperation with them, and tagged with the module.

If this is something you intend to work on, I suggest to discuss it with the #pipeline_assets_i_o module.

@brecht, in that case, I'll start the discussion with Blender Chat. Thanks for the tip.
