System Information
Operating system: Arch Linux
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 980

Blender Version
Broken: 2.93.3
Worked: Blender 3.0.0 Alpha (838b6ec48a)

Short description of error

When rendering an animation from the VSE, blender freezes the whole operating system until the computer restarts by itself.

The journal logs show the following error:

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

I have attached the blend file I used. It's 100% reproducible, at least on my machine on blender 2.93.3.

Blender 3.0.0 Alpha (838b6ec48a) works without any problems.

Can you upload file 2021-08-31 19-44-46.mkv too? Or can you reproduce issue without the file?

Sure, here's the link to google drive. It's two files in total by the way.

Thanks for files, unfortunately I wasn't able to reproduce crash.

Does this happen with latest alpha build from https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/?

Hello Richard, I tried rendering the video two times today on version 2.93.4 and it still freezes the whole computer. It froze once at frame 6199 (it was almost done) and the other one at frame 3936.

Yes, the Blender 3.0 Alpha works but since Blender 2.93 is a LTS release I figured you might be interested in finding the culprit (lately blender and ffmpeg have been kind of dodgy...)

FWIW, I've already rendered the video three times on the 3.0.0 Alpha, so it works reliably.

Ah sorry, forgot, that alpha is mentioned as working already. As far as I can tell, most ffmpeg changes are backported to 2.93. Do you use portable 2.93 version or do you compile Blender (and ffmpeg) yourself?

@ZedDB can you reproduce this issue?

I'm using the one provided by Arch Linux official repositories and it is currently at version 2.93.4.

The version of Blender from the Arch Linux repositories, to my knowledge, aren't officially supported or distributed by the Blender foundation and may have bugs due to it being compiled differently from normal Blender.
Please ensure you're using a Blender version distributed by the Blender foundation when testing for bugs if you can? Maybe the bug isn't present in the official build of Blender from the Blender foundation. Give it a try and see if it changes anything: https://www.blender.org/download

Alaska, you are totally right. It is indeed a bug on Arch Linux's build. I tried the official build from blender.org and everything works.

Sorry, I usually do check both official and beta/alpha builds before reporting a bug but I forgot to do it this time.

Thank you both for your time!

Marking it as resolved.

@charbel If you can, you should notify the people who maintain the Arch Linux version of this issue.

By the way, this is what the arch dev said:

"Probably another problem with our pretty recent version of ffmpeg. As with the other problem, we can't really do much here except hope for a patch to float our way. This is going to hit Blender upstream sooner or later anyway [...]"

I forgot, that @ZedDB is on vacation now so he can't check but there was similar issue that had to be resolved on our side, so I will reopen this report.

@charbel can you provide link to arch bugreport?

Hi Richard, sure, here's the link, there isn't much information though:

To me this sounds like failing hardware. As per the fedora FAQ about these types of errors: link

Machine Check Exception (MCE) is an error that occurs when a computer's CPU detects a hardware problem. Typically, the impending hardware failure will cause the kernel to panic to protect against data corruption.
Machine checks can indicate failing hardware, system overheats, bad DIMMs, or other problems. Some MCEs are fatal and cannot generally be survived without reboot and hardware replacement.

Now this could be happening with the Arch versions because the ffmpeg version there has different optimizations in it that triggers this.
But other than that I don't really see how we could bring down the kernel as the APIs we are using are not low level enough to allow for this.
(I could be wrong of course)

A little update on this issue. I tried rendering the same video yesterday on the latest Blender 3.0 Alpha and it now also freezes my computer. Could be a hardware problem on my side but I doubt it, maybe something changed since september 1st's build, who knows, haven't checked commits or anything.

AFAIK nothing has changed on ffmpeg side for last month really, at least functionally. Also there are no similar issues being reported, so I would check this on different machine if that is possible.

@iss Hello Richard, I just downloaded the latest build (blender-3.1.0-alpha+master.5457b6630116) and everything is working as expected, no more crashes! Thank you!
