Worked: Prior to D13309
Short description of error
Material previews lost render samples through the change to
preview.blend
in D13309With old
preview.blend
With new
preview.blend
Note:
The issue is reproducible when simply saving over the old
preview.blend
with Blender 3.0 and rebuilding without doing any other changes.Added subscriber: @SimonThommes

At least part of do-versioning was not used for the
preview.blend
(the Python side of Cycles do-versioning is one of the crucial here). This made thepreview.blend
to be configured to the default adaptive sampling using 4096 samples and threshold of 0.01). When someone opened thepreview.blend
with regular Blender all the values were more properly do-versioned to preserve configuration as close to the old one as possible.Odds that using same material setup in 2.93 would have caused same noisy-ish preview, but that's another story.
Think at this point it will be easiest to tweak the
preview.blend
settings to use adaptive samples with the same settings as the default startup. This is how it was effectively treated by Cycles since September anyway.Changed status from 'Needs Triage' to: 'Confirmed'
