Can not get mantaflow fluid simulations to work no matter what i do #94339

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 x64
Graphics card: rtx 3070ti

Blender Version
Broken: 2.93/3.0 and probably more versions that i havent been able to test
Worked: It used to work and I dont know what changed

My fluid simulations stopped working. I have deleted blender and reinstalled and i have tried other versions and i have tried deleting all files associated with blender then redownloading, also updated graphics drivers and nothing is working.

I cant even create basic fluid sims even if i click on the default cube and go to object and quick fluid simulation

It also happens with every single file so attaching a file is i believe attaching a file is useless

Please provide .blend file where simulation doesn't work.

Cannot reproduce here, working fine.

Can you try with factory settings? File -> Defaults -> Load Factory Settings

Just tried that and it still did not work

Have you tried the Quick Liquid operator? https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/physics/introduction.html#bpy-ops-object-quick
Works fine for me.

Can you use screen video recording tool of your choice to upload video of what's happening? Preferably that will show how you load factory settings and then use Quick Liquid or other simulation tool to show your problem.

Also did you downloaded Blender from this link?
https://www.blender.org/download/

I know its on my end but i have no idea why or how and yes i downloaded it from the official blender website

Thanks. That is really strange.

I see two ways to move forward:

  1. Perhaps new driver is at fault (we have that problem from time to time). You can try to downgrade it and see if that helps.

  2. Let's try to create some evidence. Please open Blender's installation directory and double click on the blender_debug_gpu_glitchworkaround.cmd. This will start Blender in debug mode and create log files. Additionaly it'll enable workarounds for typical GPU issues and disable all GPU extensions. Try to reproduce the issue again. Once you close Blender manually the Windows Explorer should open and show you up to two files, a debug log and the system information. Add them to your bug report so we could try to figure it out.

After opening it with the gpu workaround the fluid sim was working again so i might try switching to the nvidia studio drivers to see if that might help the problem

That's good to hear. You might use it for your work but AFAIK it'll make overall performance worse. There is also blender_debug_gpu_.cmd that doesn't do any workarounds, just debug log, it'll be good to see that one too.

So i just tried the other cmd of blender debug gpu and what is weird is that you are saying that it doesnt do any workaround yet somehow the fluid sims will work in that but not if i only run it the main way. I have also just reinstalled drivers completely again and nothing changed in that way and i have also gone back to downloading 3.0 from steam

It shouldn't. What about blender_debug_log.cmd (not gpu-specific debug) and blender_factory_startup.cmd (start with factory settings with even less debug logs)?

Just tried both of them and both of them work just fine. Ill send a video showing how it works with those but doesnt work with opening it through steam and through the windows search.

In a folder with Blender there is two files:
blender-launcher.exe - launching Blender bypassing command line
blender.exe - with command line (was the only way up to 2.93 I think)
Is using either one of them helps with issue?

Thanks for all the help trying to understand the issue.

Unfortunately I'm out of ideas how to help further. You can make shortcut of blender_debug_log.cmd to use it instead of your usual shortcut. Not ideal but at least it does the work.

Meanwhile I'll tag it as Unconfirmed since we can't figure out reproduce steps, fixing something that only user can reproduce is hard for developers. And also since we can't really make sure it's problem with Blender itself and not with OS/driver/etc.
I'll additionally change status to Need Triage so that others can look at it too.

Actually I think I can help you a little more.

You see, you can edit your Blender shortcut to make it run with similar conditions as with .cmd files. Right click on shortcut -> Properties -> Target box. You can see that it contains full path to original Blender execution file. Click on that box and go all the way to the end outside of quotes either manually or pressing {key End}. Next you can add command line arguments (separating them with {key Space}) so that Blender will run them as he launches.

You can try to add -d that will launch it with debug mode and see if that helps so that you can keep using Blender shortcut, not .cmd one. You can also experiment with other arguments, see:
https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/advanced/command_line/arguments.html

Yeah I tried adding the -d and it still wasnt working right for some reason so i just gave up and moved everything that was important on my c drive to my other drives and restarted my pc. It is now working again but i will keep testing it as i download things back so i can try and test to see if there was a specific thing that caused it.

So it was not working on your C drive and on the others it's fine?
Perhaps your drive is damaged or already close to it's life span? There should be software/utilities that can check it.

Hi, can you tell how it's going? Was it problem with C drive? Do you still encounter this issue?
