Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?

Description
It's extremely common to go to import an asset that you think is in one format (FBX for example) but is in another (OBJ). Or even go to open a .blend file but realize that it's an FBX.
Currently you have to go to file -> import and choose between 13 different options. 14 if you include file -> open for .blend files. If you choose the wrong type you'll have to then close the window, pick another file -> import option, navigate to the same folder again (the folder stack isn't saved if you hit cancel), and try to import again.
There should be a unified file import dialog that can handle multiple file types, like most programs do. E.g., in Photoshop you can import a bmp, jpg, png, etc., from a single file picker dialog.
This is currently an annoyance and wastes some time, and there's no user-based reason for it to be like this. I'm assuming it's a technical limitation, but that should be abstracted away when it interferes with an artist workflow like this.
