Smoke simulation silently fails in Sync to Audio or Frame Dropping playback

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22000-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1650/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 462.30

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.2, branch: master, commit date: 2022-03-31 17:40, hash: cc66d1020c
Worked: Never (tried 2.93, 2.83)

Short description of error
The smoke simulation does not simulate beyond the first frame in this particular file. Any smoke simulation added or appended from other files stops working as well.

However, everything works fine in new files on the same system & hardware.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open the blend file, move the smoke domain to clear the old cache.
Hit play and the smoke is not moving. Other physics (rigid body, particles) are working fine.

Delete everything, add a cube, add the quick smoke effect, and the same happens.

Seems to be an issue in replay cache, and all caching works, investigating.

So apparently replay smoke simulation doesn't work if Sync to Audio or Frame Dropping is in use. I guess you can say that those options don't make sense in simulations, but the confusion that this might cause to the user is no great, so confirming this.
