I am not working on this anymore, although I could resume work. This approach was suggested to me by Campbell as a general way to import custom keyframes from alembic archives. The patch was uploaded for review a few years ago: D2324.

Thanks for the report, but that is not a bug, we cannot do much if other apps decide to use the color value to tint the texture input… In Blender color value is just completely replaced by the texture when one gets linked in. Issue can also come from the simplifications we have to do to translate the Principled BSDF-based shader into the old-fashioned fixed pipeline description that is the only available option to describe materials in most formats (FBX should support proper Principled-like shader, but that is to be investigated/known todo).

If you open the UV map editor, press A to select all and then S to scale you can see that the center of transformation is somewhere in infinity around bottom-left quadrant.

Hi there is indeed something wrong with the UV map but after recreating it (and even moving it out of bounds) everything seems to be fine. Odd thing was that the center of transformation for UVs was somewhere in infinite lower-bottom part of the UV map space when you selected with B. But if you singularly clicked out all triangles and scaled the transformation center was where expected to be. There was no triangle hidden in lower left part, I was checking.

The FBX format supports both scale - translate child or scale of parent also scales the child, it is a setting, Maya and MotionBuilder can change this and FBX supports it.

I was fed up how long my imports took, and had never used boost::spirit before, so that sounded like some fun tinkering, I think i ran into issues on getting the normals and smoothing groups into blender , materials seemed like a lot of work and I lost interest in it.

Any news on this? This is a big one in terms of alembic for studios considering using it in thier pipeline, I will be more than willing to supply production example files in email, this will be for alembics exported from houdini specifically.

Well, report was missing two crucial pieces actually:

  1. A .blend file to reproduce the issue (given incomplete info I had, I though that it might have been a specific set-up triggering the issue).
  2. More important than anything, complete info with detailed steps to reproduce it (since it's not reimporting FBX file into Blender that is the issue, it’s importing it into UE4).

Now am sorry, but if UE4 decides to use the geometry part of FBX data's name as its object name, we cannot do anything about it. Blender's FBX exporter export Model FBX nodes with object name, and Geometry FBX nodes with obdata (mesh) names, as it's expected.

Pushed a fix in 2.8's version of the add-on now, based on your solution. No need to use the vertex index though, keys are used in a per-vertex context already.

Anyway, this is a bit more complicated problem indeed. Blender has this unique weird concept of datablock being something user can explicitly name. It works in case of Blender:


But it doesn't work in case of Unreal Engine 4:

Please follow our submission template and guidelines, also read these tips about bug reports, and make a complete, valid bug report, with required info, precise description of the issue (only ONE issue per report!), precise steps to reproduce it, small and simple .blend and/or other files to do so if needed, etc.
Cannot confirm here, and FBX code certainly uses Object name for the Model node, not its geometry…

Thanks for the report, but that is not a Blender issue. Making FBX IO code resilient to invalid data would be a huge task, would make that (highly complex) add-on even more complex, and... Blender is not intended to be used as a repair tool for broken files from other formats.

You can probably get better results by reducing 'simplification' parameters in Animation FBX export settings (to get more keyframes generated, and hence leave less room for that kind of glitches).

2.8 add-on code uses looptris, which only generates triangles, while in 2.7 it was using tessellated data, which could also generate quads.
