@CobraA (CobraA) Agreed. It's for good reason programs like Photoshop do not affect tool settings and only actions taken that would affect the canvas like adding/removing/modifying layers and filters. If you want to reset a tool you add a reset button to it, not have undo do it. It just creates massive problems when you need to go back a previous state of an object and your tools begin resetting for no good reason.

@Pablo Dobarro (pablodp606) I think an automatic approach would be the best approach to this if you want the brush to be user friendly. It's a bit too much to ask new users especially to disable the preview manually to avoid this problem when they will likely do a lot of experimentation and attempts at working on higher poly meshes. Plus, it is going to get old having to disable and enable it every time you want to work with it when switching from high to low poly objects and vice versa.

I have a question. Will this feature be able to use snapshots from different objects while sculpting on a new mesh? I.e. you want a mouth shape from an old sculpt of yours and an ear from another one, so you import them into your project, save a snapshot from each, and then you can paint in those two pieces onto a brand new object. I could see that being pretty useful. : )

I agree with Alberto. Heavily delaying development just for having the new system support animation is really not an option. There are other solutions to the animation problem out there that are tried and tested. You can try and see if you can do it, but forcing a new MultiRes system to accomodate animation needs is honestly silly. Animators don't need MultiRes when the SubDiv modifier and displacement maps could handle pretty much all that work for them (Blender needs a way to create displacement maps from your sculpts that the animators can use like ZBrush does it.). Sculptors however just can't work without a MultiRes system, so their needs should be taken priority here.

If SculptGL/a new system is the way to go, then you should delete the old MultiRes system. However, until the new system is in place, you can't delete the old one. There are tons of projects that have used it over the years and people need time to transition over their projects from MultiRes to MultiRes2 with Shrinkwraps and more. You need at least one official release where the legacy system and reworked system are available for this to happen.

@Pablo Dobarro (pablodp606) @Jeroen Bakker (jbakker) I just wanted to come in quickly and give my 2 cents. After having followed the development and dicussion surrounding this new painting workflow for some time, I believe it is about time that the patch got its own experimental Blender branch just like the old sculpting branch. I feel like this feature has ballooned up to the point that it needs more testers before being allowed on any Alpha master branch. The regular branches don't seem suited to deal with design issues like these and the sculpt branch ended up being a great success considering the amount of features that ended up in the official releases.

How come this commit hasn't been added to Blender yet despite being accepted? Pretty important that this gets fixed so that the Voxel and QuadriFlow workflow doesn't break.

I like the new option quite a lot, but personally I think it would look a lot better if there was a mix between the two methods. What I mean is that it would be a lot easier to see your selected object/objects if they had that effect while the rest of the model looked like the old option. Would be far easier to determine what you're looking at that way, the way I see it.

@Germano Cavalcante (mano-wii) But I did not use any special file here. I was using the baseline cube, which is built into every version of Blender. Just use Voxel with Adaptivity on and you will get the exact same results. However, I think this bug might have been fixed thanks to https://developer.blender.org/D6176 , but I will have to wait until the patch is actually released that I can confirm.

@Pablo Dobarro (pablodp606) The best Shrinkwrap option I have seen is having it set to Project -> On Surface -> Cull Faces set to Off -> Direction Positive+Negative checked on. Been using it very often while projecting details back onto my new mesh while having MultiRes activated. Don't think I have seen these projection artefacts ever using this method.

One question, @Pablo Dobarro (pablodp606) . Do the guides work with brush symmetry activated like the other brushes, or will users have to know which side of the mesh that QuadriFlow will draw symmetry from when Use Paint Symmetry is active?
